9th Rifle Brigade were part of 42 Brigade, 14th Division that arrived in France in May, 1915, and in June and July 1915 they were in the Railway Wood sector of the Ypres salient. Between 8th and 12th July, 1916 they were in the front line here. The Battalion Diary entry for 12th July recorded that it was a very quiet day with only intermittent enemy shelling to have to contend with and only ten casualties. However, it is doubtful that Percy Mitchell, who was killed in action, would have found it a very quiet day. |
